Sunday School

PROFILE

The motto of our Sunday School is "come to Jesus, bring every child to Jesus".

What happens in Sunday school can impact a child’s spiritual growth. Sunday school gives children excellent opportunities for spiritual formation. Sunday school is where most children are introduced to Bible stories that can help them see God at work in the lives of biblical characters. “As children think about these stories, they see themselves in the characters and they see God at work in their lives. The stories inspire their imaginations and encourage them to reflect on who God is. ”What children learn from Bible stories and  other classroom activities is important, but the experiences they have with people at the church, especially in Sunday school, has even more influence on how children feel about God and about themselves and about the meaning of life. Especially important is the relationship a child has with her Sunday school teacher. How she/he perceives her/his teacher can influence how she/he perceives God. If the child senses that the teacher accepts and respects and genuinely cares about her/him, she/he is likely to also sense that God accepts and respects and genuinely cares about her/him.

The Sunday school teachers are encouraged to strive to keep informed about what is happening in a child’s life and to make special efforts to show concern in times of crisis, such as when the family is expecting a new baby, or experiencing illness or a death in the family. “If a child mentions that her grandmother is very ill, we need to show her we care.”

Sunday school teachers have to give special attention to children who have special needs due to physical, mental or other challenges. “Our society often shuts these children out or tries to hide them. It’s as though we forget that they are God’s children too.” Many children with special needs experience isolation. Other children may not want to play with them. Most have been teased or called names “My experience has been that children with special needs want to participate as much as possible in activities of children in their age group. They don’t want to be excluded. They need acceptance. The church may be the one place that the child experiences a community of faith and unconditional love.” Dr. Hays suggests that Sunday school teachers and others responsible for children’s ministry review the needs of children who have special challenges. “Look around your church building and make sure that it is accessible for people in wheelchairs.” She encourages churches to help teachers learn how to work with children with special needs. “There’s no better way for us to teach children God loves them than to show them in concrete ways that we love them,” Hays concludes.

Our Sunday School is registered under 'The Mar Thoma Syrian Christian Sunday School Samajam", Tiruvalla. Ahmadi Sunday School has commenced its activities in September 1984 and resumed on 3rd September 1993 after the liberation. We follow the curriculum based on the theme "Being God's People in God's World". The classes vary from Nursery to Seniors, according to the age group. An academic year stretches from 1st January to 31st December, with a summer vacation of 3 months in between. Sunday school serves a key role in leading the students in Christian faith and moulding them to be responsible torch bearers of the faith.
